Launching our new Climate and Environmental Justice program

KEY PROJECT | CLIMATE JUSTICE

The climate crisis is the greatest human rights challenge of our lifetime.

Unprecedented fires and floods are devastating communities across Australia and globally. Prolonged heatwaves are causing water shortages and endangering the lives of the sick, elderly and those without adequate housing. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are facing new threats to their rights, country & culture.

Ultimately all human rights depend on a safe, healthy climate and environment. Our ability to avoid a dystopian future depends on what action is taken today to protect human rights and rapidly transition to net zero.

We need to put human rights at the heart of climate policy. We legal action to hold big polluters to account and push governments towards a faster, fairer transition to ensure communities aren’t left behind.

This is why the Human Rights Law Centre is expanding our work fighting for climate and environmental justice. Using our strategic litigation and advocacy expertise, this new program of work will push governments and companies to set more ambitious climate targets, protect human rights and secure the reforms needed for a sustainable future.
