Submission: Racial vilification and the Australian Human Rights Commission
The Human Rights Law Centre made a submission to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights stating there is no case for changing important racial vilification protections in the Racial Discrimination Act.
The Human Rights Law Centre’s Director of Legal Advocacy, Adrianne Walters said, “The push to weaken the laws by some has run aground. It’s hard to imagine what those pushing for change want people to be able to say that they currently can’t. Any move to weaken the law itself would have sent a green light to racism. We need to move on and focus on the fight against racism.”
Submission to 2025-26 Federal Budget consultation
The Human Rights Law Centre has put forward recommendations to the 2025-26 federal budget submissions across a range of issues, including campaigning for an Australian Human Rights Act, migration justice, prisoners’ rights, whistleblower protection and modern slavery.

The Human Rights Law Centre is calling for stronger safeguards for the right to privacy and warned that these powers enable the AFP and ACIC to undertake significant invasions of privacy, encroach on the right to privacy, and threaten to have a chilling effect on the work of journalists and their sources.
