Stopping human rights abuses for women and gender diverse people in Victorian prisons
The Human Rights Law Centre is scoping a new project with our partner FlatOut to help women and trans and gender diverse people in prison uphold their rights.
PROJECT | First Nations Justice
For women and gender diverse people detained at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Victoria, cruel and degrading practices are rife. Solitary confinement, strip searching, limited health care, an opaque disciplinary system, expensive phone calls to family, and poor access to parole are commonplace.
While people in prison have rights, there is currently no dedicated legal service in Victoria to help them speak up when those rights are breached. This project will map this currently unmet legal need.
The project will ensure the voices of people experiencing human rights abuses in prison are heard. It will identify opportunities for systemic change through law reform and advocacy to end human rights abuses in Victorian prisons and give women a better chance to thrive post-release.
