We support Treaty
The Human Rights Law Centre supports Treaty and recognises that sovereignty in Victoria and across the country has never been ceded by First Nations people.
Victoria is the first state or territory in Australia to finalise Treaty negotiations with First Nations people. This is an historic achievement. To arrive at this point is a testament to the relentless advocacy, tireless work and unwavering sovereignty of First Nations leaders and communities.
First Nations people have the right to self-determination and to make decisions on matters that affect them. First Nations people know the solutions to the injustices borne out of colonisation, ongoing racism and the oppressive laws and policies of successive governments. When we hand power back to First Nations people, it moves us forward to a better future. A better future where First Nations people’s rights are upheld and respected.
The Statewide Treaty Bill forges the path forward for a self-determined future for First Nations people in Victoria.
The Yoorrook Justice Commission’s truth telling made clear the need for treaty-making, self-determination and accountability in this state.
We back the calls by the First Peoples’ Assembly, the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service and Djirra for a new era of self-determined solutions. We will walk alongside Aboriginal communities across Victoria to support human rights, Treaty, truth and justice.
By respecting and embedding the knowledge of Aboriginal communities who have taken care of people and Country for over 65,000 years, we can create a better future in Victoria and beyond.
It’s time for all of us to listen to the truth and join the path forward with Treaty.
